Shanghai Aurora College

Shanghai Aurora College is a full-time ordinary college approved by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government under the state planning. The length of schooling is three years. The qualified graduates get the junior college diploma.

In 1903, Chinese famous patriotic educationalist Mr. Ma Xiangbo founded Aurora College, which was the predecessor of Shanghai Second Medical University merging into Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2005. In 1984, Mrs. Zhang Huili et al further carried forward the spirit of Aurora and founded Aurora Education Group and established Shanghai Aurora College afterwards.

Shanghai Aurora College has been awarded the “Peaceful Unit” and the “Civilized Unit” by Shanghai Municipal Education Committee in 2004 and 2006.

Shanghai Aurora College is located at 88 Shiyi Road, Luotian Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai and occupies an area of 200 mou. Composed of 8 departments and 1 division and has 21 specialties, Shanghai Aurora  College pays equal attention to the practical liberal arts, the health care medical courses and the manufacture engineering science and achieves the comprehensive development of economics, administration, arts, engineering and medical science. In 2008, the student enrollment reaches 4,500. Currently, we have more than 300 staff and 236 teachers. 46% of them are conferred the deputy senior professional title and above, and 34.63% of them obtain the master’s degree and above. Over the past years, we have firmly adhered to the operation idea of “people-oriented, educate people and heighten personal ability” and the operation objective of “all-around development, creation ability, good moral”, followed the distinguishing feature of the “multiple diploma system, student cadre alternate system, comprehensive assessment system, system of combining work with study” and devoted ourselves to the education and teaching.

Shanghai Aurora College has the state-of-the-art teaching facilities and the complete supporting facilities. We have the perfect campus network, library, lecture theater, multimedia classroom, audio classroom, 400m standard sports field as well as students apartment and students canteen and other modern living service facilities.

Shanghai Aurora  College establishes 66 modern training centers, including the Nutrition and Food Inspection Laboratory (teaching highland construction project financed by Shanghai Municipal Education Committee), the Journalism E-Edition and Graphics Context Publishing Training Center (teaching highland construction project financed by Shanghai Municipal Education Committee), the Social Work Practice Room, the Electromechanical Integration Room, the International Trade Practice Room, the E-Business Practice Room, the Catering Practice Room, the Guest Room Practice Room, the Advertising Creation Practice Room, the Artistic Design Practice Room, the Tourism Practice Room, the Audio Practice Room, the English Language Scene Teaching Room, the Japanese Language Scene Teaching Room and the Computer Room, etc.

Shanghai Aurora College actively explores the personnel training mode of the combination of work and study and the cooperation between school and enterprises. During the course of personnel training, we attach great importance to the synchronous development of ideological quality and technical skill. All students have a chance to pass the examination and obtain one or more qualification certificate before graduation. The employment ratio of the students graduating in 2007 is 98.5%, and our graduates are well received by the employing units.

Teaching Management

Shanghai Aurora College firmly adheres to the operation idea of “people-oriented, educate people and heighten personal ability” and the operation objective of “all-around development, creation ability, good moral” and sticks to the main thread of “conduct oneself and develop technical ability” in the field of education, teaching and management. We establish the complete rules and regulations and sets up the college and department two-layered and six-leveled, i.e. president, specialist, cadre, teachers of the same specialty, tutor and students, quality supervision system. We reform the teaching method and approach and adopt the new teaching measures, such as Q&A teaching, demonstration teaching, case teaching, scene teaching, project teaching, etc. and stimulate the students’ internal motive force for study.

Student Management

The college has equipped each class with a full-time tutor, who eats, lives and studies together with the students of the class, as well as communicates with the students, their parents and the college in time so as to solve various problems. The college has set up a system of more than one certificate, encouraging students to obtain more than one qualification certificate of vocational skills upon graduation. Furthermore, the college has set up a system of shift-working for student cadres, so as to enable each student to have an experience of being a cadre and being not a cadre. Moreover, the college has set up a system of comprehensive test and evaluation on the basis of moral, intellectual and physical performances. According to this system, actual records and appraisals through discussion, as well as qualitative and quantitative analyses are combined with each other, and results are linked with excellence assessments. In addition, the college has set up  such systems as Star Bulletin on Campus and Fault Alerting, so as to encourage students to become talented people.

All-round education

The college pays more attention to fostering students’ comprehensive qualities as well as their all-round development in moral, intellectual and physical education. The college has developed various types of courses for all-round education. It has successively offered such courses and lectures as Musical Appreciation, Dance Appreciation, Film & TV Art Appreciation, Calligraphy, Employment Guidance for Graduates, Images and Etiquettes of College Students, Education of Psychological Health and Lecture Room on Campus in and outside class, thus having enhanced the humanistic and artistic attainments of students. In addition, the college organizes such sports as football match, basketball match, table tennis match and tug of war every year, so as to strengthen students’ physical qualities. In 2008, the college was awarded a prize in the Winter Long-distance Run Competition for Students in Higher-learning Institutions in Shanghai.

Construction of Party and League

In terms of moral education and education of people, the General Party Branch of the college has been playing a role as a political core. The General Party Branch of the college is the only general Party branch with a right of examination and approval among the private higher-learning institutions in Shanghai, as approved by the Party Working Committee Run by Local People of Shanghai. The college runs secondary Party schools every year independently, so as to offer education of Party constitution to activists for joining the Party, thus having enhanced the political awareness of the activists for joining the Party.

Under the leadership of the General Party Branch, the League Committee of the college has unfolded many large-scale colorful and diversified activities, such as organizing volunteers to participate in Shanghai Tourism Festival, F1 Big-prize Competition and 2007 motorGP China Big-prize Competition. In addition, the committee has unfolded “1234” Activity in summer vacations: an investigation report on the theme of “ I Love My Family, I Love My Community and I Love My Hometown”; reading two good books: unfolding the theme reading activity of “knowledge is power, reading can sublime your life”; drafting three major-related certificate-obtaining plans: drafting three major-related certificate-obtaining plans during the college period according to social vocational demands and in connection with the major you are studying and making all necessary preparations; launching four thanksgiving campaigns: expressing your gratitude to your parents, teachers, the society, and the mother nature.
